10. August 2010 Just ran into a memorable quotation yesterday:

"Die gefährlichste Weltanschauung ist die Weltanschauung derer, die die Welt nie angeschaut haben"

  Alexander von Humboldt

"The most dangerous worldview is the worldview of people that have never viewed the world"

Braun Collection Kronberg

22. July 2010 My dear wife and myself undertook a spontaneous trip to the town of Kronberg near Frankfurt today to get some inspiration from the fabulous work of German designer Dieter Rams. The Braun company maintains a small design collection there that left us with deep respect for the work of this man.

The exhibition maintains a nice website that offers all the details and can be found in the physical world at:

BraunSammlung der Braun GmbH
WesterbachCenter
Westerbachstraße 23C

Tondo

13. January 2010

Tondo is the old city center of Manila and home to a huge dumpsite colony. A friend of ours, Jane Walker, has made it her mission to help the children of the poorest of the poor by providing for decent school education.

We have visited the facilities last year and were very much overwhelmed by the situation.

Muellkultur (Waste culture)

2. October 2009

Germany is truly into waste. No joke. After having returned to the country after 10 years of absence I am surprised to find how much. If you live in Singapore or in the US, buildings often have a waste chute into which one just drops any kind of waste and never worries about it again.

Germany on the other side cares about it's waste. It's not even called "waste" anymore. It's called "Wertstoff" (item of worth). The government expects you to separate waste manually in your home. Not that I had ambitions to become a waste picker but, then again, to a degree this makes sense (like separating toxic waste from regular waste).
