Braun Collection Kronberg

My dear wife and myself undertook a spontaneous trip to the town of Kronberg near Frankfurt today to get some inspiration from the fabulous work of German designer Dieter Rams. The Braun company maintains a small design collection there that left us with deep respect for the work of this man.

The exhibition maintains a nice website that offers all the details and can be found in the physical world at:

Dieter Rams

is probably the single most influential designer in modern industrial design. Originally an architect he joined household appliances maker Braun in the 50s where he designed numerous household appliances and became the lead designer.

Read more about him in this wikipedia article.

We were extremely delighted to see that his designs from the 60s are still so attractive (and not at all following short lived fashions) that they would still beautifully fit into a modern day living room. I must admit the electrostatic speakers really got my heart beating faster!

With his designs Dieter Rams has inspired numerous other designers, the most notable being Jonathan Ive, the man that brought us the design of the Mac and the iPhone.

If you look closely, the radio in fact has a BFO button!
